Typically, Poker is played with 5-7 players. The player with the highest hand wins the pot. If all players fold, play continues to the next round. If only a few players remain, the pot is divided equally. In Omaha, a variety of rules are used. If the lowest hand is not eligible, the pot is split.
A player chooses five cards from a deck of twenty-seven and uses them to form his or her hand. The player may then request to discard one or more cards, which may improve the rank of his or her hand. When all the cards are dealt, the player must decide whether to call or raise the current bet. The player who raises the bet increases the stake to match the last raise. If the player calls, the betting phase is over. If the player raises, the betting phase begins again.
The first round of betting begins with the player to the left of the dealer. If all of the players have called, the dealer’s bet is placed in front of him and the betting phase is over. If no player calls, the next player in the hand can raise the bet.
The second round of betting begins with the player with the highest face-up card. The remaining players bet in turn. If no player calls, the betting phase ends. If all of the remaining players do call, the players with the best hands continue to bet. If a player raises, the players who do not raise have to call. The player with the highest hand wins the first half of the pot. If no one calls, the remaining players have the choice to fold.
The third round of betting, known as “The Turn,” begins when all players reveal their cards. Then, each player is dealt a card. If the player with the best face-up card makes a straight, the player who made the straight wins the pot. If no one makes a straight, the player with the high card wins the pot. The other half of the pot is won by the player with the low hand. A straight does not count against a low hand. If the high and low cards are aces, they still can be used to make the high and low end of a straight.
The fourth round of betting begins with the player with the next highest face-up card. The remaining players can choose to match the current open bet, raise the bet or fold. If the player chooses to raise, the other players must not raise the bet. If the player chooses to fold, the betting phase is over. If no player folds, the player with the highest hand makes a Straight Flush. If the player with the low hand qualifies, the pot is divided evenly.
The fifth and final round of betting, known as “The River,” is the last round of betting. If all of the players check, the betting phase is over. If a player checks, the bet is placed in front of him.
